Gordon Thornett

Gordon Thornett (b. 1942) read Music at Manchester University, and has had a long career as a teacher and a music therapist in the UK. As a keen choral singer, he has written a number of new settings of Christmas texts, which have been performed by the CBSO Chorus (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus) of which he is a long-standing member, and other symphony choruses and smaller choirs in the UK, USA and other countries. Some of these have been published in the UK by Oxford University Press, and in Norway by Norsk Musikforlag. He was commissioned by the CBSO to write a Festive Overture, The Joy of Christmas, and this is published by Faber, and was also issued as a recording under the Heritage label [HTGCD 299], and broadcast a number of times on BBC3 and Classic FM. His orchestral suite, A Child's Christmas, available from SwirlyMusic, has also been released on CD [HTGCD 139] in a recording by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

This setting is ideally suited for a good chamber choir with a high soprano soloist. Julie Myers’ beautiful poem suggests to the composer a journey from darkness to light, from despair to hope, and this is reflected in the music, which should be performed simply, but with expressiveness and conviction.
