A Fanfare for Tony

for Brass Ensemble and Timpani

A Fanfare for Tony was written for the inaugural conference of the British Association for Music Therapy, and first performed there on 21st February 2014 by students of Birmingham Conservatoire of Music. This is a slightly shortened version, suitable to be played at any celebratory occasion. The fanfare is scored for ten brass instruments and timpani, and was written in memory of Prof. Tony Wigram (1953-2011), a pioneer in the field of music therapy in the UK, and well known internationally both as a therapist and for his research and writing on the subject.

The piece contains a number of passing references to music therapy songs, and quotations from music strongly associated with Tony’s family, including a Danish folksong (introduced by the four trombones), and a theme from the Organ Symphony by Saint-Saens. A short fugato section leads to a triumphant ending, featuring the German hymn tune Nun danket alle Gott.

Includes score and full set of parts.

This work was commissioned in early 2015 by the Estrella Brass Quintet. As indicated by the title, it is in six sweeping movements which explores the timbral possibilities of the ensemble. The work, and especially the final chorale-chaccone, is dedicated to the memory of my father, composer William Thomas McKinley, who passed away on February […]

This Processional was used four times in weddings of the composer’s family. It is also available in an organ only version. Being sectionalized, it is easily abbreviated to fit a particular time frame for a particular wedding party and sanctuary space. This is not a traditional wedding march, but unique and different, should such be […]

Chiaroscuro was composed in 1991 for the CONVERGENCE Ensemble, a group of dancers and musicians, who gave the first performance at The Painted Bride Gallery in Philadelphia. In the concept of the dance, lighting played a major role, sometimes silhouetting dancers posed like sculptures against a light background, sometimes presenting them brightly against the dark, […]

The two roughly equal-length movements relate to each other by contrast– the first, rather somber; the second more jubilant. Both movements are through-composed, without apparent repetition or recapitulation. However, symmetries and parallels exist between the two. Canons begin movement one, and conclude movement two. Both begin with introductions, followed by a main section which builds […]
