Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis

Mixed Chorus and Woodwind Quintet

These Biblical texts are often associated with the Advent season of the Christian calendar. It is also sung anytime of the year at “Evensong” in Episcopal and Anglican traditions. The accompaniment is a traditional Woodwind Quintet. The composer knows of no other choral piece that uses this instrumental combination to accompany a choral work. If there are none, then, that is a sad thing, because that ensemble produces a wonderful variety and beauty of sound. Perhaps college and university groups might find this an opportunity to pull together faculty or students to offer this unique combination of woodwinds and choir. Churches, too, should find this combination a fine departure from the usual and a fresh sound for their service.

BENEDICTION was written in February-March of 2013 for my friend Keith Haan upon his retirement as Director of Choral Activities St. Ambrose University. A very rhythmic drive characterizes this exuberant setting of the traditional Christmas text, “Christ is born today” set in Latin. Choirs love to sing the jazzy rhythms and harmonies that require care in tuning, but once mastered create a contemporary sound world that will energize any Christmas concert or service.

Commissioned premiere performance at Davies Symphony Hall (San Francisco) by the San Francisco Girls Chorus. The explosive Lang work was appropriately contrasted by the excellent, gentle and more subtle O Magnum Mysterium by Kurt Erickson. This world premiere was commissioned by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.  Here the “mystery” part of the thematic trinity […]

This lovely setting of St Thomas Aquinas’s famous Corpus Christi text will be useful all year round for church choirs which like to perform unaccompanied motets during the administration of Holy Communion. With its independently moving parts, gentle chromaticism and slow, lilting 5/4 metre, it is a calming evocation of the mystery of the sacrament. […]

The text comprises a solitary verse, St. John 3:8, taken from Nicodemus’ well-known nocturnal conversation with Jesus. The anthem is intended for use in a generous acoustic, such as a Cathedral, where during the many bar rests, the fragmented and overlapping phrases can be given opportunity to resound and reflect until the reverberation dissipates. The […]
