Apple Pie

for SATB choir and piano

Apple Pie is a novel, fun, upbeat and humorous tale of two friends searching for their favorite dessert. It was the winner of the Wasatch Chorale Ars Nova Composition Competition; their call for scores asked for a piece suitable for an afternoon family concert. With a rollicking piano part moving it along, the chorus tells of 2 friends who can find every type of pie you can imagine, except their favorite! In fact, almost 30 pie names are mentioned in the delightful and delicious text by Susan Vitucci. The piece lends itself to many possibilities: perhaps it can be acted out or projections of pies could be utilized. In the premiere performance, the audience was given signs with pictures of various pies to hold aloft when their pie was mentioned. It is of medium difficulty.

A setting of the brief yet powerful poem by Walt Whitman (from “Leaves of Grass”). The score takes its cue from the meditative nature of the text. There is a contemplative tone throughout, laced with subtle harmonies and perhaps inspired by the works of Randall Thompson. The score quietly expresses the expansive feeling one gets […]

Let Him Return acknowledges the fear, anger, sadness, and raw courage of the women throughout history who have prayed the universal prayer that their men return safely home from war. Primarily triadic, there are numerous modulations throughout this work, effectively preventing harmonic predictability. The vocals begin with the altos in unison, then sopranos divisi, and […]

Scored for SATB chorus, with two pianos and percussion, this uplifting setting of e.e. cummings’ “i thank You God for most this amazing” was commissioned by the Wilmington Friends School to celebrate their 250th Anniversary. It is an excellent choice for pairing with the Killmayer reduction of Orff’s Carmina Burana. There is, unfortunately, no live recording of […]

This setting incorporates a more recent and beautiful translation of the most ancient of Christian hymns, Phos Hilaron, by the late William G. Storey. This anthem would be perfect during the lighting of candles at Evensong, Vespers, or Compline.

In the poem “Psalm of the Sky,” Rabbi Rachel Barenblat reimagines “The Lord is My Shepherd” (Psalm 23) in a contemporary context. Performers may highlight the many instances of text painting and create contrast between moments of gentleness, boldness, and carefree movement. The last verse of Psalm 23 is included in Hebrew as a coda […]

Rosa mystica is a sacred devotional cantata combining various texts in which a rose or flower is used as an analogy for the Blessed Virgin Mary, including the Rosa Mystica tradition, and Mary as the stem of the rose from which, arising out of the root of Jesse, grew Jesus, the Spotless Rose. Walk With Me is a charming, romantic invitation to share the simple activities of life with one’s companion of the heart. The text reflects the passage of time — spending a day, or metaphorically, a lifetime, alongside the beloved. While this piece is basically tonal, a few surprising and challenging modulations maintain a certain freshness […]
