GA-ZE

SSA choir with piano and optional percussion

GA-ZE (SSA) is from the northwestern part of Uganda (West Nile Region), bordering with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire). It is closely associated with the traditional Gaze dance of the Lugbara people, and the lyrics are a mixture of Lugbara and Lingala. The Gaze play/dance songs encourage and inspire children, usually girls, to be active and creative, and most importantly, to dance.

This arrangement is based on the version performed by the touring music and dance troupe Spirit of Uganda, and was taught to Santa Fe University of Art and Design students by a member of that group, Peter Mugga, as shown in this Youtube video.

From an Oregon Bach Festival concert review by Tom Manoff, in the (Eugene, Oregon) Register-Guard , July 11, 2002: “Rebecca Oswald is not a showy composer, but she’s an honorable one. ‘The Soul Contemplates the Creator In the Creation’ is splendid choral writing. This unpretentious style isn’t calculated to impress the trendy set, but in […]
