Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in F (The Ripon Service)

for SATB or unison voices and keyboard

This setting of Evensong Canticles (BCP 1662) is intended for use in those churches which are looking for a relatively simple choral setting, or that don’t always have a mixed choir and need the flexibility of being able to sing the canticles in unison where necessary, or where a choir of children’s/women’s voices or men’s voices sing the service alone.

For churches with a mixed voice choir, SATB and unison textures are alternated throughout to provide a satisfying but easy to learn setting.

However, the canticles can also be sung in unison throughout, with optional lower harmonising notes in bars where the melody is in its higher reaches (F being the highest note). Suggestions are made as to how upper and lower voices can be alternated and combined, to provide variety of texture between the phrases.

In an earlier form it was first performed at Choral Evensong in Ripon Cathedral in the UK, on 21 May 2016, by the Yorkshire Decibelles under their director, Ruth Sladden.

This delightful piece sets a whimsical poem by the American poet, Susan Kinsolving, about steps taken internationally to make the world a better place. Sanford Dole’s Dance Steps has artistic merit…no one can doubt the artistic merit of Dole’s entertaining piece. I was not looking forward to enduring Susan Kinsolving’s absurdist text, printed in the […]

This haunting melody, is one of the most beautiful songs that the slaves composed; bone-weary and sorrow-filled… with their eyes firmly fixed on a Great Deliverer somewhere up in heaven. The itinerant preachers that visited the plantations, selected specific passages from the Bible- guaranteeing them entrance to the Promised Land- if they worked hard for […]

A traditional text for Psalm Sunday in the Christian Calendar. However, since it is also found in the Psalms, it is appropriate for uses at other times, especially for festive, celebrative occasions. Church choruses love this exuberant setting as do congregations. Organists will appreciate opportunities to shine as well.

This joyful harvest song may be of particular interest to choral groups within the Jewish tradition, but it may equally prove to be a useful addition to the harvest or thanksgiving repertoire of any choir. The text is taken from World Healing Prayers, with additional text by Linda G Marcus, adapted by the composer. There’s […]

This Spiritual strikes to the very heart of an enslaved people, fervently longing for freedom. The melody is quite simple, and is embellished with a layer of pathos, and yearning that is impossible to resist, or ignore. Absolutely appropriate for performance in a concert hall, as well as a liturgical setting.
