Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in F (The Ripon Service)

for SATB or unison voices and keyboard

This setting of Evensong Canticles (BCP 1662) is intended for use in those churches which are looking for a relatively simple choral setting, or that don’t always have a mixed choir and need the flexibility of being able to sing the canticles in unison where necessary, or where a choir of children’s/women’s voices or men’s voices sing the service alone.

For churches with a mixed voice choir, SATB and unison textures are alternated throughout to provide a satisfying but easy to learn setting.

However, the canticles can also be sung in unison throughout, with optional lower harmonising notes in bars where the melody is in its higher reaches (F being the highest note). Suggestions are made as to how upper and lower voices can be alternated and combined, to provide variety of texture between the phrases.

In an earlier form it was first performed at Choral Evensong in Ripon Cathedral in the UK, on 21 May 2016, by the Yorkshire Decibelles under their director, Ruth Sladden.

When I first discovered Charles Bernstein’s beautiful poem, I knew immediately that I wanted to set it for men’s chorus. The poem expresses so much within a brief, 4-verse form. I set out to use harmony to color the text’s rich imagery while honoring the poem’s lyrical and repetitive nature in the melody. The surprising […]

This setting of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ stately, mixed-meter hymn tune uses shimmering tone clusters to depict the textual themes of light and fire in the first two verses. The third verse emphasizes themes of humility and service in an earthy a cappella setting, after which a building organ interlude leads into a towering and majestic […]

Charles Wesley’s hymn text based on the story of Jacob wrestling with the angel depicts a deeply human struggle for truth and understanding. This a cappella setting of the text grows with the building intensity of Jacob’s determination, finally breaking into the joy of revelation and reassurance in the final verse.

“Snowflakes” is a short, peaceful, wintry song for a cappella SATB chorus, with lyrics by Linda A. Copp. The piece was commissioned by Cantabile Chamber Chorale, directed by Rebecca Scott, for performance in their 2003-04 season.
