Copypasta
for SATB chorus and piano
by Emily Hope
Merriam-Webster.com defines copypasta as “data (such as a block of text) that has been copied and spread widely online.” This piece, Copypasta, is a setting of three of my favorite text memes that originated on Tumblr. The first movement, Spiders Georg, illustrates the statistical concept of outliers using the example of an arachnid-eating recluse. The second movement, Hot Plum, recounts the author’s harrowing encounter with an overripe plum on the driveway after stepping out of the car. The third movement, I Think That’s Beutiful (sic), finds an unexpected human connection in the eating of canned pineapple.

| SATB | 4'36" | Latin | This energetic setting of Gloria in excelsis Deo, from the Latin Mass, opens with rhythmic patterns that enhance the text. Midway through, the chorus softly occults between two simple chords under an alto then baritone soloists. The opening patterns return before a fugal section at the text “cum santo spiritu.” The final Amen is another […] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Equal Voices ⋅ SSAA | Each round 1′30″ to 2′ (in performance) | English | Without doubt, children of all ages enjoy singing rounds. The rounds they learn are likely to be the old worthies of past centuries: “Sumer is icumen in”, “Fie, Nay, Prithee, John” or “Well Rung, Tom!” This original collection balances the standard repertoire with a variety of easy, feel-good rounds: the sweet, the comic and the […] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| SSAA | 4'30" | Latin | Commissioned premiere performance at Davies Symphony Hall (San Francisco) by the San Francisco Girls Chorus. The explosive Lang work was appropriately contrasted by the excellent, gentle and more subtle O Magnum Mysterium by Kurt Erickson. | SATB | 4' 25" | English | One of Newfoundland’s best known folksongs, “She’s Like The Swallow” was first collected by Maud Karpeles in 1930, but certainly dates from well before that, as evidenced by the appearance of several verses in various British laments. The subject of the unfaithful lover is perhaps as old as song itself. “She’s Like the Swallow” is […] | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
