Infinity Suite

for string quartet

Two lovers are lost in Space after a mission failure as a result from spacecraft malfunction. The rest of the crew did not survive the ordeal. Their spacesuits will keep them alive for a while, but soon they will run out of oxygen and must say goodbye to each other. It is in these final moments that they will get to experience the journey of a lifetime, experiencing the complexity of the fabric of Time, traverse a Molecular Cloud and finally come to the somber realization that their journey is over as they float away into the endless Abyss.

The vastness of Space is initially represented by the opening harmonics. It is then joined by the interwoven melodic lines of the bottom voices, representing the two lovers. The lovers continue their journey through space, where they now experience the dilation and bending of Time, which reaches its climax at an asynchronous section that encompasses the ensemble. The lovers then are met with a beautiful Molecular Cloud in which their approach is tense and unpredictable. As they traverse the celestial body, the gas molecules surround them, and they experience its inner beauty. The lovers are once again met with the vastness of space, represented by an entire movement in harmonics. The movement then ends with the four voices in contrary motion representing the separation of the lovers as they float away into the Abyss.

This String Quartet is a balance of dramatic and lyrical material, varying greatly. The opening movement begins with poignant polyphony, but then morphs into rapid-fire exciting passage work in the central portion, returning in time to the quieter mood of the beginning. Movement II reminds one of a classic Siciliano, with its dotted rhythmic patterns […]

Elegance and Superstition is a piece that was born out of a musical gesture and a guiding principle. The gesture consists of two notes tossed upward, like balls into the air. There is a pause, and they are tossed again, this time a bit higher. The guiding principle is derived from something that composer Eve […]
