March of the Templars

for Trumpet and Organ

Nine centuries ago, in the aftermath of the First Crusade (1095-9) Hugues de Payens and eight of his countrymen journeyed to Jerusalem and formed a community of warrior-monks, who came to be known as The Sovereign Military Order Of The Temple Of Jerusalem; or Knights Templar. Making monastic vows of obedience, chastity, and poverty, and charged with the duty to “maintain the roads and highways against the ambushes of thieves and attackers, especially in regard to the safety of pilgrims.”

Bearing the red cross of martyrdom upon shoulder and breast, and fighting with single-minded zeal on recovering Christianity’s sacred places in the Holy Land, The Order flourished for nearly two hundred years, with the motto:

Non nobis, Domine, non nobis sed nomini tuo da gloriam

“Not to us, Lord, not to us but to Thy Name give the glory”
