If Ever There Is

for SATB choir a cappella

“If Ever There Is” is a setting of “John’s Song,” by American poet Robert Creeley (1926-2005). The poem has a dedication to the poet John Taggart; the style of wordplay and repetition here can also be found in Taggart’s poetry. I hear it as a prayer for peace. In 1967 Creeley signed a “Writers and Editors War Tax Protest,” an ad in which over 500 vowed to protest the Vietnam War by refusing to pay a 10% war tax. “If Ever There Is,” is entirely derived from the opening melody, made up of seconds and thirds; these intervals are almost exclusively used as the work unfolds. In the first half of the piece, the choir works together, sounding an insistent plea. In the second half, the parts move more independently. We move from minor to major as the voices dream of a time when we can experience life without war. “If Ever There Is,” was a 2013 Essentially Choral selection & workshopped by VocalEssence, Philip Brunelle & Francisco Núñez.

This light-hearted holiday song was commissioned by a local community chorus, one of whose members wrote the words. I was asked to include a part for children’s choir, and I understand everyone enjoyed taking part. It has a simple message – to chase away the gloom, and spread light and happiness to all at Christmas […]

This setting of a poem by Linda Marcus is entirely pentatonic (i.e. uses only 5 notes – C, D, F, G and A) apart from the very last measure. The pentatonic setting is intended to create a naive effect, recalling childhood. (The very opening is based on a universal 3-note ‘song of childhood’.) The points […]

The round in Western culture has been associated as closely with wit as it has with praise. Here are thirteen risible rounds of varying difficulty intended for a cappella performance. Admirably suited to treble voices, they may be sung by mixed groups of all ages. The lyrics are light and teasing, the music jaunty and […]

This lovely setting of St Thomas Aquinas’s famous Corpus Christi text will be useful all year round for church choirs which like to perform unaccompanied motets during the administration of Holy Communion. With its independently moving parts, gentle chromaticism and slow, lilting 5/4 metre, it is a calming evocation of the mystery of the sacrament. […]
