Rise heart, thy Lord is risen

for SATB divisi & organ

This Easter anthem sets selected words from a famous text by George Herbert. It is scored for large SATB choir with divisi and organ.

Although highly suitable for use by church choirs at Eastertide services, it also forms the triumphant climax of the contrasting set of “Three Anthems”, commissioned by the Purbeck Arts Choir. The set make a compelling and dramatic concert item, and were first performed in this form, in Swanage, England, on 28 March 2015.

The other pieces in the set are “My beloved spake” (with which the set opens) and “Ponder my words, O Lord”. Both are also available via Swirly Music.

The words of this carol/motet are well-known from Britten’s teenage tour-de-force, but that double-chorus setting is out of the reach of most church choirs. The powerful text, alternating English and Latin in the style of medieval carols, warrants an additional, simpler setting. The work is suitable for concert performance, as well as for liturgical use […]
