Variants on Madrid
“Madrid” is a traditional Spanish melody that is most often associated with the hymn “Come Christians Join to Sing”. It is found in most protestant hymn books, and is sung regularly in many “Mainline” churches. The complete set of variations is one that will find many uses in worship services as a longer prelude or in recitals. Individually, each section has varied uses as well. The opening “Theme” can serve as an introduction to singing the hymn. Middle sections can be useful as offertory pieces. The “Flourish” makes for a nice, brief postlude. All five sections, or a subset of them, would work as a prelude to a wedding service.
This work was written for Dr. Brian Mathias, faculty organ instructor at Brigham Young University and a busy recitalist in the Midwest and Western US, including frequent recitals at the Auditorium and Conference Hall at the of the Mormon Church Headquarters in Salt Lake City.
