“Winds of May” took First Place in the Morningside College Choral Competition. It is one of two settings by Madelyn Byrne of poems from James Joyce’s Chamber Music. The other setting, “Rain Has Fallen“, is also available from Swirly Music.
The composer writes:
Chamber Music, is an early work by James Joyce. It is a collection of poems dealing with the young author’s feelings of loneliness, anticipation, and love. In this collection, Joyce uses descriptions of his natural environment to symbolize these bittersweet emotions. In my settings of these poems, I am letting these descriptions lead me in shaping the music. These pieces were written for the Palomar College Chamber Singers under the direction of Sally Dean.

| “Are Friends Delight or Pain?” is a brief a cappella double-choir movement (SATB + SATB, ~1’45”) excerpted from Cycle of Friends, setting Emily Dickinson’s epigram with concentrated intensity. | Sanford Dole’s Ave Maria is a harmonized setting of the Gregorian chant antiphon. The soprano part is a metrical version of the Gregorian chant melody. It is written for a cappella SATB chorus, and although it has infrequent divisi a due in each of the parts, the use of smaller vocal forces (8 or 16 performers), with lighter Renaissance-style singing is preferred.
