Tián Mì Mì

for mixed chorus, a cappella

The melody for Tián Mì Mì is taken from an Indonesia folk song, Dayung Sampan, which became popular across East Asia during the late 1700’s. In the early 1900’s, the melody was given Chinese lyrics written by the famed poet and song writer, Zhuang Nu. This version is now recognized across China as one of the most beloved folk songs in Chinese culture. This choral arrangement uses a slower tempo than what some may be used to so that the lush harmonies may be experienced more sumptuously. The third verse allows for all the voice parts, besides the soprano, a chance to sing the melody while the accompanying parts dance around using syncopated rhythms. The last section returns to verses one and two and ends softly with “a zài mèng li” (Oh, in a dream). A thorough IPA pronunciation guide is included.

When I first discovered Charles Bernstein’s beautiful poem, I knew immediately that I wanted to set it for men’s chorus. The poem expresses so much within a brief, 4-verse form. I set out to use harmony to color the text’s rich imagery while honoring the poem’s lyrical and repetitive nature in the melody. The surprising […]

Sanford Dole’s Ave Maria is a harmonized setting of the Gregorian chant antiphon. The soprano part is a metrical version of the Gregorian chant melody. The other parts create a harmonic world that is uniquely Dole’s; what his choirs refer to as the “Dolian mode.”

This delightful piece sets a whimsical poem by the American poet, Susan Kinsolving, about steps taken internationally to make the world a better place. Sanford Dole’s Dance Steps has artistic merit…no one can doubt the artistic merit of Dole’s entertaining piece. I was not looking forward to enduring Susan Kinsolving’s absurdist text, printed in the […]

Nearly every December, Christmas sneaks up on me far too quickly, busy as I am with end-of-semester grading and final exams. I’m an admittedly nostalgic guy who unabashedly loves Christmas music, and every year I think to myself ‘I really should have written a Christmas piece this year’. Christmas 2015 followed a similar pattern, except […]
