My Voice

for SSAA chorus, piano, and strings

The work was commissioned by the Contra Costa Children’s Chorus for its 25th anniversary season (2008-09) and was first performed December 20, 2008.

The poem “My Voice” was written especially for this work by author Patricia Doherty to celebrate the Contra Costa Children’s Chorus’s achievement, as well as the role of music in the lives of these talented young singers. It answers the questions “What is my voice? Where does it come from? What do I do with it? Where does it take me? The poem was published in Visions: The Collected Poems of Patricia Doherty (2009).

A moving setting of the classic American lullaby. Good for developing singers, but also a good choice for some lovely unison singing with more advanced ensembles. The students we arranged this for absolutely loved it. We hope your choir does too.

This energetic setting of Gloria in excelsis Deo, from the Latin Mass, opens with rhythmic patterns that enhance the text. Midway through, the chorus softly occults between two simple chords under an alto then baritone soloists. The opening patterns return before a fugal section at the text “cum santo spiritu.” The final Amen is another […]

This arrangement of the well known spiritual would suit a good school, college or community choir. It is light and a little jazzy in style. While it can be accompanied by piano alone, the addition of string bass and solo violin is to be recommended. Drum kit could also be an optional addition from letter […]
