Chiaroscuro

for mixed septet
by  Andrew Rudin

Chiaroscuro was composed in 1991 for the CONVERGENCE Ensemble, a group of dancers and musicians, who gave the first performance at The Painted Bride Gallery in Philadelphia. In the concept of the dance, lighting played a major role, sometimes silhouetting dancers posed like sculptures against a light background, sometimes presenting them brightly against the dark, sometime shifting light sources so that still figures seemed to move and cast varying shadows. Hence, the ‘light and shadow” of the title. The instrumentation was chosen so that instruments could emphasize at one time or another either dark or bright timbres.

The Trio for flute, clarinet in A and piano has to be interpreted as a long Recitative. The original intention was to describe a metaphoric mountain climb with various happenings until reaching the summit. The work is divided into sections and it comprehends various combinations of instruments: flute starts alone with the first recitative, then […]

The satiric piece Grottesca (Grotesque) aims to explore a particular area of humor. It is not programme music, although it depicts with irony the various accidents that can happen during a music performance. A close analysis of the piece should reveal this. For the first performance a sort of pantomime was realized to emphasize better […]

I wrote the Divertimento for oboe, clarinet and bassoon in 1995 as an entry in the New England Reed Trio annual composition competition. I had admired the playing of this group and their promotion of wonderful, if rarely heard repertoire of this combination, much of it French. The prospect of writing for reed trio seemed […]
