Swirly Music has functioned for several years as a very small online venue offering a small handful of my own pieces. Over time I managed to streamline the flow from the buyer to the printer and I built an effective little system that has served me well.
Doing my own marketing, and with this logistical stuff solved, I have never been very motivated to seek a relationship with a traditional publisher. At this point, honestly, I’m not sure what they can do for me that I have not already solved.
It occurred to me that, with a little more development (OK, a lot more development), there’s no reason why I can’t offer this site up as a service to other composers in a similar situation. Having explored what’s out there, I discovered two things:
- There isn’t much out there that serves this need
- What is out there is not as well executed as it could be, particularly around building an engaging shopping experience for the buyer.
Being a veteran web developer as well as a composer, it has not been difficult for me to build what it seems to have been a struggle until now: a clean, user-friendly web store that serves the needs of composers and consumers alike.
If you haven’t explored the store, have a look around and see what you think, and feel free to send an email to email@example.com with any questions or comments. To join us, simply click here to get started.
Thanks for taking a look!

P.S. – Since there is no mass-market demand for the type of music carried here, and our mission is to provide this service regardless of how well your music sells, we are a de facto non-profit. As of August, 2014, Swirly Music is a fiscally sponsored project of the non-profit arts service organization Fractured Atlas. We greatly appreciate any additional financial support offered by members of the new music community.
